'Dreamland' zinnias

in spite of the miserable heat, I have a garden full of hot pink phlox, zinnias, white daisies, yellow four-o-clocks, black-eyed Susans and many varieties of ferns, which I thought would have succumbed by now. The roses have lost all their leaves, but continue to produce small, unimpressive flowers. They’ll come back for one last splash in September.

Growing amidst the flowers are a profusion of tomatoes and eggplant, as well as fresh herbs. I am truly learning how to maximize my small space and get fresh food as well as fresh blooms.

I am firmly convinced that many of the pests that we hate so much in our gardens reside in grass. With no grass in my back garden and paths made of gravel, I have very few pests on my plants. I don’t spray. As it is, there are few enough bees visiting the flowers. My kitties don’t have fleas, mosquitoes are at a minimum and I have no Japanese beetles.
